Alec Baldwin was almost Mr. Big on ‘Sex and the City’

To “Sex and the City” fans, Chris Noth will forever be associated with his role as Mr. Big — but the romantic lead was originally intended for someone else. “I was thinking of Alec Baldwin for Big initially [in ‘Sex and the City’],” Darren Star, who created the HBO series, told Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t really watch ‘Law & Order,’ but I met with Chris Noth and thought he was perfect.” Baldwin wouldn’t come to TV until two years after the end of “SATC,” starring as suave network exec Jack Donaghy on NBC’s “30 Rock.” Meanwhile, Noth’s Big — real name John — went on to romance Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) throughout all six seasons of “SATC,” with their tumultuous on-again/off-again relationship finally ending in marriage at the end of its first film sequel. What’s more, Carrie’s other big love/onetime fiancé — and Big’s rival — Aidan (John Corbett) was also written (and named) for a different actor. “We initially were thinking about Aidan Quinn for Aidan, but I think he wasn’t available,” Star added to EW. “I loved John Corbett in ‘Northern Exposure’ . . . He just had the laconic, dudish vibe. But we kept ‘Aidan’ because we loved the name.” It’s hard to imagine the hotheaded Baldwin playing the mellow Big or funnyman Quinn as the folksy Aidan. Though if they had, this Season 4 fight might have turned out a bit differently.
