There is an unintentionally hilarious moment at the start of “High Strung” in which a shirtless male violinist (Nicholas Galitzine) plays music furiously in bed after waking up; “If it stays trapped inside,” he narrates, “I will be consumed.” This onanistic allusion is the raciest moment in this teen dance movie, which makes up in exuberant energy what it lacks in original plot or plausibility (its New York subway scenes were apparently shot in Romania, whose enviably modern stations look nothing like ours). Ballet student Ruby (Keenan Kampa) is all technique; subway busker Johnnie (Galitzine) is all soul. Will these two crazy kids find love and make a splash in a string-and-dance competition with the help of his hip-hop dancer neighbors? The journey to this foregone conclusion features several dance-offs mashing up contemporary and classical styles, which director Michael Damian (“Love By Design”) shoots with gusto. Sure, this is all a familiar tune — but it’s still catchy.
