A new dating reality show is bringing to the screen that most modern of courting rituals — texting. In Fox’s “Coupled,” 12 single women will meet eligible men on a Caribbean island and, like Tinder come to life, will “instantly decide if they feel a spark of chemistry and want to spend more time with each guy,” according to the network, or if they want to metaphorically swipe left and wait for the next man. Once the couples are formed, they’ll spend time together to see if they’re truly compatible, and unlike every other reality show, “Coupled” is arming its single men and women with cellphones. What’s more, the daters’ text conversations will appear on screen — meaning viewers will get to see the “hey girl, u up?” messages and misconstrued sarcasm that modern, digital romances are made of. While straight-up sexting seems unlikely — this is broadcast TV after all — perhaps some creatively used eggplant emojis could get past the Fox censors? “Coupled,” which is hosted by entertainment personality Terrence “J” Jenkins, premieres May 17.
